Johann Friedrich Fasch (Composer)
Born: April 15, 1688 - Buttelstedt near Weimar, Germany
Died: December 5, 1758 - Zerbst, Germany
Johann Friedrich Fasch, a contemporary of Bach and Handel, was one of Germany's leading composers in the first half of the 18th century. He was a chorister at Weißenfels in 1699 under Johann Philipp Krieger, a scholar of the Thomasschule in Leipzig from 1701 to 1707, where he studied law as well as music, the latter under Johann Kuhnau.

Johann Friedrich Fasch founded in Leipzig a 'Collegium Musicum,' which seems to have been the ancestor of the 'Grosse Concert' and so of the Gewandhaus concerts; he wrote overtures for the society in the style of Georg Philipp Telemann, and composed three operas. for the Naumburg fair and elsewhere. In 1712 he visited many cities and courts en route to Darmstadt, where he studied under Christoph Graupner and Grünewald. He beccame a violinist in the orchestra in Bayreuth in 1714, and also held court posts in Greiz and Lukavec. In 1714, after leading a wandering life for some years, he was an official secretary at Gera, and in 1719 went to Zeitz as organist and Rathschreiber, where he remained for two years. In 1721 he took service with Count Morzin at Lucavoo in Bohemia, and in 1722 was appointed court Kapellmeister at Zerbst, where he remained for the rest of his life. There he wrote 12 cycles of church cantatas, other sacred music and festival works for the court. He gained widespread fame, ans was was invited to compete for the post of Kantor at the Thomasschule in Leipzig against J.S. Bach, but apparently refused to do so. J.S. Bach held Fasch's music in high esteem, and copied out five orchestral suites of his. An autobiographical sketch appeared in Marpurg's Historisch-kritisch Beyträge in 1757.

None of Johann Friedrich Fasch's music was printed in his lifetime, and much of it is lost. In the collection of music left by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach was a whole set of church cantatas by Fasch. Several masses, a Requiem, eleven church cantatas and motets, one Passion-setting, various overtures, trios, sonatas, etc., are preserved in manuscript at Leipzig, Dresden, Berlin and Brussels. He is credited with at least one Passion, 14 Masses, 2 Credo, 4 Psalms, some 100 Church Cantatas, 4 Serenades, 4 Operas, plus a quantity of concertos (about 60, structured like Vivaldi's), overtures/orchestral suites (about 90), trio sonatas and symphonies. Fasch's modern reputation rests on his overtures, symphonies, concertos, and chamber music. Unusual and progressive scorings feature in his orchestral music, and his output shows a transition from Baroque to early Classical style; some late works anticipate the idioms of Gluck, Haydn and Mozart.

Johann Friedrich Fasch was the father of the composer Carl Friedrich Christian Fasch (1736-1800).

Friedrich Georg Fasch, the Rektor in Buttelstaedt, married Sophia, the daughter of the Liessling Pastor, Wegerig, on 3rd May 1687. On 15th April of the following year, their son, Johann Friedrich Fasch was born, and baptised two days later. Friedrich Georg was called shortly thereafter to the Rektor of the school in Suhl, where he died in 1700. Johann Friedrich was sent to his maternal uncle in Teuchern, Gottfried Wegerig. (Teuchern was the birth place of Reinhard Keiser; Johann David Heinichen was also born nearby; Keiser had left by the time Fasch arrived, but Johann Christoph Schieferdecker, who would later be called to Hamburg to play continuo in the opera house there under Keiser's direction, was still in the village and might perhaps have given the boy lessons) The move proved propitious, as a singer from the court of Herzog Johann Georg of Sachsen-Weissenfels, Scheele (who was also a distant relative: according to Eva-Maria Ranft in Beitraege zur Bachforschung 6, 1988, this was Andreas Schele, a tenor in the Hofkapelle from 1686-1700; she also refers to a Jacob Schele, who was at court from 1689-92), was so impressed when he heard the boy sing that he recommended him for the vacant position of Diskanist in the opera there for the Winter Season 1700/01. During this time, he appears to have had music lessons with the Kapellmeister, Johann Philipp Krieger, and he will also have had the experience of singing some of the latter's settings of cantata texts by Erdmann Neumeister. Autumn 1701 saw Fasch leave Weissenfels and make one of the most decisive moves of his career: he became the first pupil to be taken on at the Thomasschule in Leipzig by the new Kantor, Johann Kuhnau. The expenses he incurred both here and later at unversity caused him considerable anxiety in later life. He was at the school until 1707. He matriculated at Leipzig's Law Faculty. (Ruediger Pfeiffer quotes G. Erler's edition of Leipzig students of 1909: Fasche, Ioh. Frdr. Sula Henneberg. dp. 12 gr. i. S. 1703 B 3, prom 1 ... i. S. 1708) Engelke gives Johann Fridericus Faschius Sula-Hennebergensius unter der Rubrik Poloni. Two sources suggest that he also studied Theology - Arnold Schering in his history of music in Leipzig, and a comment in a letter to Zinzendorf where Fasch says "das Studium Theologicum wieder zu ergreiffen". Over the next few years, musical life in Leipzig featured some of the most celebrated composers and musicians of the time, all of whom would have an impact on Fasch, and with whom he would remain in contact for the rest of his life.
