Jacques Mauger comes from Normandy and studied the trombone at the Regional Conservatoire in Rouen, and subsequently at the " Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris ".
A prize-winner at international competitions at Markneukirchen in Germany, and at Toulon, he started his professional career as first trombone with the Nice Philarmonic Orchestra, and then became trombone soloist with the Paris Opera Orchestra.
Since 1990, he has concentrated on work as a concert artist, and has often appeared as a soloist in France and abroad with ensembles varying from string, and symphony orchestras, to brass and concert bands, and has given recitals with piano and organ accompaniment.
In addition, he has made television appearances on ZDF in Germany,GLOBO in Brazil, RAI in Italy and MUZZIK in France, and has broadcast on RFI, France Inter, France Musique, France Info and the BBC, thus making himself known to a wild public.
Many composers, such as Michel Legrand, Jean-Michel Defaye, Jérôme Naulais, Bruno Coulais, Antoine Tisné, Lourival Silvestre Jacques Bondon and Alexander Rudajev, Jean Françaix, Piotr Moss, Albert Cellac, have composed original works or made special arrangements for him. To quote but two examples: the Concerto for trombone and string orchestra by Alexander Rudajev which had its first performance in Florida in 1996, and the T-Bone Concerto by Johan de Meij, first performed in march 1996 with the band of the Royal Netherlands Navy at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
Jacques Mauger is a versatile musician and undertook to make the trombone known as a solo instrument through the medium of a musical show called " Flight 944 for trombone ", (" Vol 944 pour trombone ") which was produced in december 1995 at the Silvia Monfort Theatre in Paris. The show, which includes a pianist and a percussionnist, makes use of a wide repertoire including pop music and was wildly successful. It has been seen on stages in France and abroad and is still in production.
Jacques Mauger is still active as a teacher at the " Conservatoire Supérieur de Paris / CNR " where he was appointed in 1994, and also at the "Accademia Internationale Superiore di Musica "Lorenzo Peroni" di Biella (Italy). He often gives masterclasses in numerous countries: at Flaine and Nice in France, the U.K, Japan, Korea, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Holland, the United States, and South America.
He has also taught at international conservatoires, such as the Guildhall School in London, and the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, the Valencia Conservatoire, the Detmold Musikhochschule, Ueno University in Japan, Bogota Conservatoire in Colombia, Seoul University and at the Federal University of Minas Gerai in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
